Governor Issues Alaska Day Message

Statement

Date: Oct. 17, 2013
Location: Juneau, AK

Governor Sean Parnell issued the following statement in observance of Alaska Day:

"On Alaska Day, we mark the transfer of Alaska from Russia to the United States in 1867. Although the purchase of Alaska occurred months earlier, the actual transfer ceremony occurred in Sitka on October 18, when the Russian flag was lowered, and the U.S. flag, still with only 37 stars, rose at Fort Sitka.

"What a journey it has been, as a district, a territory, and a state. Alaska is the most beautiful state in the nation, with the freest people who possess great opportunities. This journey is far from over and we have a bright future ahead. On this Alaska Day, let's celebrate and give thanks for our exceptional state and her good-hearted people."
